Here at Argos Pet Insurance, our vet, Rebecca tales you through a list of 5 human foods that dogs should avoid.

1. Chocolate
The most common toxicity we see at veterinary practice. Theobromine is a compound like caffeine and its contained in various amounts in different types of chocolate. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain the highest amounts and therefore are the most dangerous. Symptoms of consumption can include excitability, vomiting and diarrhoea, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, and, in severe cases, seizures and even death.

Please never give your dog human chocolate - there are dog chocolates available.

2. Grapes, raisins, currents and sultanas
The fresh and dry forms of these fruits can both be toxic. The most dangerous side effect is acute kidney failure but milder symptoms include vomiting and diarrhoea. Avoid giving even a single grape or sultana to your dog.

3. Xylitol
This is an artificial sweetener which is found in lots of different foods, including low sugar and diet foods and chewing gum. It can cause an acute and dangerous drop in blood sugar and other symptoms include vomiting, weakness and, in severe cases, seizures and death.

4. Alcohol
Never give your dog alcohol. The consequences of your dog digesting sweet liqueurs, boozy trifles and cakes can include, vomiting, disorientation and, in severe cases, coma or even death.

5. Macadamia nuts
These nuts can cause unpleasant, though thankfully not fatal symptoms in dogs. They can cause vomiting, weakness and muscle tremors within 12 hours of consumption.
