Chocolate poisoning in dogs
Chocolate is toxic to dogs, even in small doses. This is because chocolate contains a compound called theobromine. This is very similar to caffeine and dogs lack the ability to metabolize it properly. The amount of theobromine varies, with dark chocolate having the most, milk chocolate having a medium amount and white chocolate having a very low amount. The clinical science associated with chocolate toxicity depends on how much your pet weighs and how much they've eaten.

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Seizures
- Collapse
- Cardiac arrest (serious cases)

What to do if your dog eats chocolate?
If you think that your dog has ingested any amount of chocolate, contact your vet immediately and take them down. Your vet can administer an injection that will make your dog vomit and bring up the chocolate and also give them a compound called activated charcoal that helps reduce the absorption of any further amount of theobromine from the gastrointestinal system. If your vet feels if necessary they can keep your dog in on fluid therapy and heart medications to help control the side effects associated with theobromine toxicity.
