How do I know if my cat has fleas?
Flea infestations are not always as obvious as you might think, especially if your cat has gorgeous long hair or if there are only a few fleas and the infestations just started. Cats also vary enormously in their individual sensitivity to flee bites. Some cats just give the odd scratch and others are actually allergic to the flee saliva will pull their hair out and become covered in scabs.

Where to look for fleas on your cat?
To look for fleas on your cat, start by searching in the areas where fleas most like to live. That is:
- The back of the neck
- The rump
- Behind the ears
- Under the chin
- Between the back legs
- The groin
- Behind the thighs

Using your fingers or a comb, part the hair all the way down to the skin. In this way you might see live fleas, flea dirt's or flea eggs.

What are cat fleas?
Live fleas are tiny brown or black insects that dart quickly through the coat, away from the light.

Flea dirt's which are actually flea faeces, look like tiny black flecks when you run your fingers or comb through the coat. If you use a damp ball of cotton wool to pull the hair out of the comb, you'll see that these black flecks stain red and that is because they contain digested blood which has been sucked out of your cat.

Flea eggs are tiny and oval-shaped and look a little bit like grains of sand. Its very important when you're managing a flea infestation to treat your home as well as your pet because 95% of flea eggs and larvae are actually in the environment and not on your path.
