Pet First Aid - What could or should we be doing?
Applying first aid to your pet can be daunting, particularly if its been an accident that can leave you and your pet shocked. The most important thing to be aware of is if your pet is injured and they are in pain, they may respond differently to how you would normally expect them to. So, your safety does need to be taken in to account if your are worried that you could get injured by your pet acting in an unusual way. Seek veterinary attention straight away rather than trying to administer the first aid.

What to include in your pet first aid kit?
- A dressing
- Different types of bandages
- Gloves
- Scissors
- Carrier bag

Try and have a dog first aid kit in your car. You can most of these items from your local vet and of you speak to them, they will be able to provide you with the varying different things that will just give you the basic treatment to provide first aid whilst out on a walk.

If your pet is to cut its leg out on a walk the best thing for you to do is to try and just apply a light bandage. This just helps to keep any dirt or reduce the chance of any infection. It can also stop any bleeding. It just means that it covers the wound whilst you're getting from your walk to seek medical help at your vet. If you have water available with you, it is worthwhile trying to give the wound a little bit of a wash to try and remove any dirt or grit that might be in the wound. If you're able to dry it with a towel or something you have to hand before you apply the bandage.

How to apply the dressing to your dogs wound?
- Apply a dressing to the wound first
- Apply a padding layer ensuring that you include all the toes
- Apply a protective layer
- Cover the bandage it with a plastic bag to ensure it stays clean and dry and doesn't get wet and muddy.

Just remember your safety is as important as your pet, so if you are unsure or don't feel comfortable about providing first aid, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
