How can I clip my dogs nails without stressing us both out?
It is important to keep your dogs nails short is important in order to avoid damage to your dogs paws. When long nails touch the ground, they can exert force back in to the nail bed, creating pressure and pain. It can make running and walking difficult as dogs wont distribute their weight evenly. They are also more susceptible to getting torn or split, causing pain and the need to seek veterinary help.

Get them used to the dog nail clippers
Examine the paws and get them used to it being handled. You should do this on a day to day basis.

Approach your dog nice and calmly. The most important thing, is you want to avoid a region called the quick. This is the pink part at the very top of the nail. It supplies blood and nutrients to the nail. If you clip it, it is painful and it will bleed. Your pet will then associate that with the clipping of the nail and it will make it harder from then on.

Cutting dogs nails
You don't have to cut the nail all the way down to the base. All you need to do is clip enough so that when the nail is put on to the ground, its nice and flush to the floor. This is because, when you walk the dog it will wear it down naturally anyway.

Avoid using at home scissors or shears to cut your pets nails - they're not very effective. You're going to want to look in your local pet store and you should be able to find plenty of pet specific nail clippers.

If you are still struggling at home to clip your pets nails, then go to your local vets or nurses and they'll be more than happy to do it for you, usually at just a small cost.
