This week Tip Tuesday is filled with Instant Pot tips for newbies. Don't let that box sit unopened because you are scared. It looks difficult with all those buttons. It really isn't difficult. It is simple. Just follow these tips. You'll be cooking like a pro in no time.
1a) Once you put it all together, check the sealing ring b4 cooking - make sure it is in correctly, as with the plastic that holds the pin in place and the shield. Make sure it doesn't have anything stuck in it b4 cooking,
1b) Make sure the vent is closed b4 locking the lid.
2) Plug it in and hit saute (or cook on some models or pressure cook) even if you aren't going to saute. It preheats the pot so it will come to pressure faster. Once it says "hot"cancel the saute setting.
3) If you are sauteing, use a binder clip or trudeau clip to lock the pot in place for easier stirring.
4) To make sure foods don't stick, make sure you wait for the pot to say "hot" once you hit saute. When it says hot, add your oil or fat and wait another minute to add your food.
5) Another way to make sure that food doesn't stick is to deglaze the pot. Heat your oil, add your food and cook, stirring, and then add clear liquid (broth, stock, wine or water) and scrape the bottom of the pot to release all those tasty brown bits. Then lock the lid and press whichever button you want.
6) To make sure that the pot doesn't give you the "burn" make sure to deglaze the pot before pressure cooking.
7) when converting slow cooker recipes to instant pot recipes, make sure to add clear liquid to recipes with condensed soups or it will say "burn" and it won't come to pressure.
8) When planning your meals, make sure to add in the timing of the pressure to your cook time - yes it takes 4 minutes to cook rice but it also needs to come to pressure and then release pressure. So add in that extra time.
9) when waiting for the pressure to come up or to release do some multi tasking instead of watching the pot. Lock the lid, set the time and cycle and Walk Away. Come back halfway through to make sure that it is cooking. If not, then cancel the setting and open the lid to make sure of what is wrong and then re-lock the lid and walk away. Come back and the pin has dropped, finish your recipe and get the food on the table.
10) Do not stir - layer your recipe in the pot. Do your saute, add your pasta or meat or whatever, canned goods, veggies and then do not stir. Lock lid and cook. Then stir after you release the pressure.
11) The rice cup is only for rice. The measurements in the pot are only for cooking rice on the Rice setting. The measurements are metric not American. That is not 8 oz in that cup. It is 6 oz. Use a regular measuring cup - follow measurements in charts at Instant Pot Cooks-Reference Pinterest Board or in books. 1 cup rice to 1 cup liquid or 1.25 cups liquid, depending on the type of rice.
12) Do not store the Instant Pot on the stovetop. Someone might mindlessly turn on the stove and the pot will burn. Instant Pot will not replace it free, Do NOT store it on the stovetop.
13) When the machine is making noise and steam is coming out before it comes to pressure, make sure to move the Instant Pot out from under cabinets. Also when releasing pressure. Steam will ruin the finish on your cabinets.
14) Do not try to adapt your favorite slow cooker or stovetop recipe the first time you cook in your instant pot. Do something very simple after you do the water test. Make chicken breasts, or a roast chicken, or baked potatoes or hard boiled eggs. Do not make something like pasta or spaghetti. It takes a bit of learning to do it correctly. Have confidence after doing some simpler dishes and then try your hand at pasta or your favorite dish.
15) To get rid of the smell in the sealing ring - a) steam some cut lemons in water on steam setting for 3 minutes. Make sure the pot cools off and the lemons cool off then remove the sealing ring and wash it. Put it back in. b) Put the sealing ring in the dishwasher and the smell should dissipate.
EXTRA TIP:
Store your Instant Pot with the lid upside down on top of the pot. This way the smells will not stay in the pot from the previous cooking.
